For the first time in a very long time I will not be attending and guiding the Minnesota Governors fishing opener. Instead I will be heading to Blackduck Minnesota with some life long friends for a little fishing and a lot of catching up! I am really looking forward to it. Reports and photos coming soon.

“When pan fish are on the move, you need a rod and reel that will perform as hard as you do to track them down,” Brian said. “I chose HT’s Ice Blues. Not only can I trust my Ice Blue combo to perform well, but it doesn’t break my bank account, either!”
Recently, Brian decided to try a new lake and it paid off. “This was one of many big gills I caught with my HT Ice Blue rod–I paired it with an HT Accucast 6 bearing spinning reel spooled with 3 pound test to create the ultimate system,” he revealed. “My Ice Blue system works flawlessly. and handles all the big pan fish I catch with ease!”
I get asked all the time ” what is your favorite go to lure for BIG Bluegills through the ice”? My response usually generates a look of concern. Spoons are my favorite go to lure for BIG Bluegills, Crappies and just about every other fish that swims in the lake. My spoons of choice are the Moon Frye, Lil Rascal and the Willow Daddy from Snyder’s Lures. Spoons often attract big Bluegills because of their size and profile. A well jigged spoon will often keep the smaller Gills at bay and give the larger fish a chance to inhale the lure. A lite rod with a 3 plus bearing reel will often work well when using spoons. Tip the spoon with Euro larva, wax worms, minnows or soft plastics. Be prepared to also catch Bass, Walleye and Crappies as they’re often tempted to eat the spoon as well. Give a spoon a try on your next outing.
